The Grow stream supports more experienced researchers who are seeking to advance or expand their applied research activities. Projects in this stream require an industry cash contribution or external grant funding and focus on building research capacity and long-term sustainability.
Seeding Research Partnerships
The Steeves Family Innovation Fund supports applied research projects that bring together Mohawk College faculty, staff, students, and external partners to solve real-world challenges. Established in 2025 thanks to a generous gift from the Steeves Family, the fund invests in early-stage and capacity-building applied research that advances Mohawk College’s Academic Plan and Strategic Plan while delivering meaningful impact for industry and community partners.
About the Steeves Family Innovation Fund
The Steeves Family Innovation Fund provides $10,000–$20,000 per project to support applied research initiatives led by Mohawk College faculty or staff. The fund is designed to spark new ideas, strengthen research capacity, and create hands-on learning opportunities for students, while helping partners address practical challenges.
Projects supported through the fund emphasize collaboration, real-world application, and outcomes that contribute to workforce development, innovation, and community well-being. Priority is given to projects that align with Mohawk College’s strategic priorities and demonstrate potential for future growth or external funding.

Funding Streams
The Steeves Family Innovation Fund offers two funding streams to support researchers at different stages of their applied research journey.
Launch Stream
The Launch stream provides seed funding for faculty and staff who have not previously led applied research at Mohawk College. It is intended to help emerging researchers work with a new external partner, explore an applied research opportunity, and build foundational research experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for funding?
Full-time and part-time Mohawk College faculty and staff are eligible to apply as research leads, provided they receive approval from their manager, as well as their Dean and Associate Dean or Manager. Priority consideration is given to emerging researchers who have not previously received funding from the Steeves Family Innovation Fund, the IDEAWORKS Catalyst Fund, or the ARIE Fund.
If you are an external partner, please contact IDEAWORKS to be connected with a potential research lead.
What is applied research?
Applied research projects aim to solve real-world challenges and have immediate practical applications, including applicability for workforce development or strong connections between partners and students. Applied research projects will help industry, government, and community partners resolve issues and challenges they are facing in their organization.
Your application should demonstrate that the project:
- Aims to solve a specific problem
- Has immediate practical applications
- Focuses on an industry or community challenge
What is the average project duration and how does reporting work?
Funded projects will begin on August 1, 2026, and must be completed by July 31, 2027, with most projects running between eight and ten months. Research leads are responsible for working with IDEAWORKS to set up project accounts, securing research ethics approval when required, and submitting both mid-term and final reports to support project monitoring and accountability.
Who is an eligible partner?
It is mandatory that this project include a partner organization that will benefit from the research findings.
Partner organizations can be private sector (industry, start-ups, etc.), community, educational partner, not-for-profit, hospital, or government organizations.
Partners should be engaged in the project through in-kind or cash contributions and must be willing to sign a collaboration agreement with Mohawk College.
Partners must provide a letter of support with the application.
How can students be involved in the projects?
The funding intends to provide a meaningful experiential learning opportunity for Mohawk College students. Student engagement on a funded project must reflect how students are gaining valuable research skills as active members of the research team, such as acting as research assistants or technicians. Using students as research subjects (e.g., completing surveys or focus groups) does not qualify as student engagement.
How are projects assessed?
Applications are reviewed by a selection committee and assessed based on the overall quality and clarity of the proposal, alignment with priority areas and strategic plans, appropriateness of methods, quality of student engagement, feasibility and risk management, and the strength of partner involvement and contribution.

Capstone Courses
Mohawk College has a number of applied research capstone courses. Enrolling in one of these courses is a great way to gain applied research experience outside of an IDEAWORKS research centre. Many of our researchers collaborate closely with faculty to support these courses.
Mitacs
Mitacs fosters collaboration between academia, government, and the public and private sectors to support innovation. Mitacs supports internship opportunities for students through their Business Strategy Internship Program and through Accelerate.
Mohawk students have two ways to take part in a Mitac’s supported project: As a co-op student, you may be able to self-source a Mitacs-funded co-op opportunity. All Mitacs-funded opportunities must be pre-approved by your Co-op specialist. As a Mohawk student, Mitacs-funded research assistant positions may be available through existing IDEAWORKS research collaborations. Available postings will be posted in CareerReady.
