Stronger Together: How BACCC is Driving Collective Climate Action

The Bay Area Climate Change Council (BACCC) is a collective impact initiative uniting community leaders, government, and industry to drive regional climate action in Hamilton and Burlington. CCCM played a key role in developing and supporting BACCC, providing project management, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy support. The initiative has led to broad community collaboration, policy recommendations, and public engagement campaigns focused on reducing emissions.

The Challenge

The Cities of Burlington and Hamilton are in the “Bay Area” of Lake
Ontario and share an economy and environment. As such, in 2018, the
two Cities and Mohawk College committed to collaborate on solutions
that would strengthen our communities.

The Bay Area Climate Change Council (BACCC) is a collective impact
initiative of 14 community leaders. The coalition is supported by the Cities
of Burlington and Hamilton, and administratively housed at the CCCM.
The BACCC creates a shared collaboration space for government,
industry and community groups, and creates advocacy and education
campaigns on community priorities to address the climate crisis.

The CCCM led the development of BACCC in partnership with both Cities
and continues to host BACCC as a “coalition in residence.” This means
that BACCC staff work within the CCCM offices, enabling them to access
wrap-around administrative supports from the college, as well as access
to a network of researchers and colleagues working in climate change.
This “coworking” approach strengthens both the work of BACCC and the
CCCM.
Representatives from both Cities and the CCCM serve as “ex-officio”
members of BACCC.
